Sun Circle Black Handwoven Palm Wall Hanging | Malawi

Sale price$128.00
SKU: MWSC36-BLKRIM

Organic texture meets graphic form in this Sun Circle Palm Wall Hanging, a striking handwoven piece crafted from natural palm leaves. Its deep black center and bold outer edge frame a finely woven radial pattern, creating a sense of depth and movement across the surface.

At 36 inches in diameter, Eclipse has the scale and presence of a contemporary art piece while retaining the warmth and imperfection of a handmade object. Hang it alone as a focal point or layer it with other natural textures and sculptural forms for a collected, sophisticated interior.

Each piece is woven by hand in Malawi by a pioneering women’s weaving collective dedicated to preserving indigenous weaving traditions while creating sustainable opportunities for local artisans.

The natural palm and handwoven construction mean that subtle variations in texture, tone and form are part of the character of every piece.

" Contemporary pieces rooted in indigenous knowledge and traditional techniques"

In Malawi, often called the “Warm Heart of Africa,” generations of artisans have transformed locally available natural materials into objects of remarkable beauty and utility. In communities near Lake Malawi, skilled weavers draw upon longstanding traditions to create furniture and home décor from bamboo, blue gum, and other sustainable materials, combining exceptional craftsmanship with ingenious design. What began as a practical response to limited resources has evolved into a celebrated artisan tradition recognized far beyond Malawi’s borders.

One of the earliest organized weaving groups, formed in 1979 near the village of TA Kapeni, helped establish a foundation for this thriving craft movement. Their meticulously woven furniture showcased a level of skill and precision that attracted international attention and opened new market opportunities for local artisans. Today, Malawian makers continue to build upon this legacy, collaborating with designers from around the world to create contemporary pieces rooted in indigenous knowledge and traditional techniques. Their work not only supports artisan livelihoods and strengthens local communities, but also brings the warmth, creativity, and craftsmanship of Malawi into homes across the globe.

Statement Piece

I really love the sun circles that i ordered. I wanted a statement piece for above my sofa, and I think they really stand out, even against the darker paint. The coloring is slightly different from what is pictured, but I think they're so unique and lovely. Really happy with them.

Thank you Rebecca for the review and lovely photo! They do look fantastic. =)
