Seedpod Guinea

Sale price$14.00
SKU: SPB-GUI

Guinea fowl are known as a garden's natural pest control, since they have incredibly sharp senses and have no trouble spotting bugs, insects and critters. They are also oh-so-cute with their polka dot feathers!  Using the seedpods of the Ulumbu Tree (Sterculia rogersii), Zimbabwean artists have created these charming little birds. Standing on hand twisted wire feet, they are between 3-4" tall and are hand painted in the rich bright colors of each bird's plumage.

Seedpod Artisans

📍Ruwa, Zimbabwe

" The family undertakes a demanding three-day journey, traveling nearly seven hours each way to the Bulawayo region to gather the pods"

What began in 1994 as a way for George and Raina to earn additional income has grown into a thriving family craft in Ruwa, Zimbabwe. Since taking the reins, Raina continues to grow the business alongside two of her daughters, a son, and extended family members.

Each whimsical bird begins with the seedpod of the Ulumbu tree (Sterculia rogersii), which does not grow in abundance near their home. To source the materials, the family undertakes a demanding three-day journey, traveling nearly seven hours each way to the Bulawayo region to gather the pods. Using the natural seedpod as the body, they shape wire by hand for the legs, sculpt the beaks, and individually hand-paint each bird in vibrant colors—transforming humble natural materials into joyful works of art.
