Bolga Basket Weavers of Ghana

📍Bolgatanga, Ghana

" Celebrating the creativity and craftsmanship of the Gurunee people"

In Ghana’s Upper East Region, master weavers transform locally harvested elephant grass into some of West Africa’s most iconic baskets. Working in and around Bolgatanga, a region renowned for its weaving heritage, artisans draw upon generations of knowledge to create baskets that are both highly functional and beautifully expressive. Using traditional techniques such as twining, coiling, and plaiting, each piece is woven entirely by hand and reflects the skill, creativity, and cultural traditions of its maker.

We work with a community of talented women and men artisans, creating sustainable economic opportunities while preserving one of Ghana’s most celebrated craft traditions. Natural fibers are dyed and woven into intricate patterns inspired by local symbols, nature, and regional storytelling traditions, resulting in baskets that are as meaningful as they are beautiful. Through fair wages, skills development, and community investment, the organization helps ensure that this remarkable weaving heritage continues to thrive for future generations. Every basket carries with it the artistry, resilience, and cultural richness of northern Ghana.
