Soapstone Carvers of Kenya

📍Kisii, Kenya

" "

In the rolling hills of Kisii, Kenya, artisans have been hand-carving soapstone for generations, transforming this beautifully soft local stone into sculptural objects of remarkable character and craftsmanship. Quarried by hand and shaped using time-honored techniques, each piece celebrates the natural beauty of the stone, with its soft tonal variations and organic finish making every carving entirely unique.

What began as a regional craft has grown into an internationally recognized art form, thanks in part to the vision of a pioneering Kenyan couple who helped bring Kisii soapstone to a global audience. By creating sustainable export opportunities while honoring traditional craftsmanship, they helped transform a local artisanal practice into a thriving source of livelihood for carving communities across the region. Today, these handcrafted pieces continue to support skilled artisans and preserve one of Kenya’s most iconic creative traditions—bringing authentic functional art from Kisii into homes around the world.
