" Contemporary pieces rooted in indigenous knowledge and traditional techniques"

In Malawi, often called the “Warm Heart of Africa,” generations of artisans have transformed locally available natural materials into objects of remarkable beauty and utility. In communities near Lake Malawi, skilled weavers draw upon longstanding traditions to create furniture and home décor from bamboo, blue gum, and other sustainable materials, combining exceptional craftsmanship with ingenious design. What began as a practical response to limited resources has evolved into a celebrated artisan tradition recognized far beyond Malawi’s borders.

One of the earliest organized weaving groups, formed in 1979 near the village of TA Kapeni, helped establish a foundation for this thriving craft movement. Their meticulously woven furniture showcased a level of skill and precision that attracted international attention and opened new market opportunities for local artisans. Today, Malawian makers continue to build upon this legacy, collaborating with designers from around the world to create contemporary pieces rooted in indigenous knowledge and traditional techniques. Their work not only supports artisan livelihoods and strengthens local communities, but also brings the warmth, creativity, and craftsmanship of Malawi into homes across the globe.
