Iringa Basket Weavers of Tanzania

📍Iringa, Tanzania

" Truly a labor of love, these baskets are traditionally gifted to brides by female members of the family"

In the remote Njombe and Iringa regions of Tanzania, women artisans create the distinctive Iringa Baskets using locally harvested milulu grass and natural dyes. Unique to this part of the country, each basket reflects a time-honored weaving tradition celebrated for its organic beauty and enduring design. Through thoughtful partnership and fair wages, this work creates meaningful economic opportunity for women, helping them support their families, access education and healthcare, and improve their quality of life. More than 450 women artisans have been trained in the intricate, multi-step process of preparing natural pigments, dyeing the grasses, and handweaving each basket—a craft that takes weeks to complete and preserves a remarkable regional tradition.
