Hippos symbolize power, deep understanding and protection of family. They are the second largest mammal on earth. Hippo means ‘River Horse,’ and the hippo spends most of its day in water, being highly territorial and protective of their young.

Bursting with personality, this delightful metal hippo is hand crafted from recycled 40 gallon oil drums in Zimbabwe. The artists leave what remains of the original fun and vibrant colors on the drums, creating this unique mosaic effect.  It's another wonderful example of creating beauty from waste - something African artists do uniquely well. Oil Drum Artisans of Harare

📍Harare, Zimbabwe

" Visionary artisans transforming oil drums into dramatic sculptural works of art"

In Zimbabwe, skilled metal artisans transform discarded oil drums and reclaimed steel into dramatic sculptural works inspired by the wildlife of Africa. Using hand tools, welding techniques, and remarkable artistic vision, these makers breathe new life into materials that would otherwise be discarded. Their striking animal masks and sculptures capture the power, movement, and personality of the natural world, demonstrating how creativity and sustainability can work hand in hand. Each piece is individually crafted, making every work a unique expression of the artist’s skill and imagination.

Among these accomplished artisans is master sculptor Tendai Lloyd Mapuranga, whose work has earned international recognition for its exceptional precision and lifelike detail. Since beginning his artistic journey in 2009, Tendai and other Zimbabwean metal artists have elevated recycled metal sculpture into a celebrated contemporary art form. Their creations, found in galleries and homes around the world, not only showcase extraordinary craftsmanship but also embody the ingenuity and resourcefulness that have long defined Zimbabwe’s artistic traditions. Through the transformation of humble oil drums into enduring works of art, these artisans continue to demonstrate the power of creativity to reveal beauty in unexpected places.
