Carved by hand from Zimbabwean serpentine, this abstract elephant pares a familiar form down to its simplest lines. Offered in two sizes, 5 and 7 inches tall, it is lovely alone and even better as a pair.

The stone
Serpentine is the traditional stone of Zimbabwean sculpture, and its color is entirely the work of nature. Each elephant is cut from a different block, so yours may be black, brown, green, dark orange, or variegated with several tones at once. The pieces photographed show the range; the one you receive will have its own color and markings. If you have a preference, send us a note before ordering and we will do our best to match it from the pieces on hand.

The maker
Cuthbert Tendayi shapes and finishes each elephant by hand in Zimbabwe, around five hours of work per piece. The design is consistent, and the slight differences in line and proportion from one elephant to the next are the mark of hand carving. Two sizes - 5" tall, for a desk, windowsill, or bookshelf - 7" tall, for a side table, mantel, or entryway console Choose your size from the menu. Together, the two read as parent and child.

The meaning
The elephant has long stood for strength, wisdom, patience, and long life, and is traditionally kept in the home as a sign of good fortune.
