The Mbunda speaking people from western Zambia weave these ruggedly unique and beautiful baskets. They get their name after the large Makenge bushes that grow throughout the Mongu region anywhere near water. They send out long, shallow roots that the weavers can dig up easily from the sandy soil. These baskets take over a week to complete, from digging roots, peeling them, boiling them with other plants to dye them, letting them out to dry and finally weaving them into these beauties.
Because these are vintage baskets, they also carry the stories of the people who used them in their everyday lives. These are truly treasures!
