Basket Weavers

WomenCraft is a fantastic community-driven social enterprise operating from the remote rural area of Ngara, Tanzania.  Their mission is to increase economic opportunity in the post-conflict, tri-border area of Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania by bringing rural women together, facilitating their growth and connecting their artistry to the global marketplace. Brought to life as part of the MADE51 mandate given by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, at WomenCraft these refugee artisans are seen for their talents, craftsmanship, and potential.  Through this project these displaced women, men, and children gain access to international markets, generating reliable incomes which then strengthens their resilience and helps to restore their sense of self-determination. Over 300 artisans are empowered, raise stronger families, stimulate their communities and inspire the world around them.

The feed sacks in which refugees receive their monthly food rations are recycled and woven with the grasses native to the region, which gives these baskets their white color. They are accented with minimalist designs in colorful threads giving them a modern look, perfect for adding a touch of handmade to a contemporary space. Truly a purchase with purpose, every sale of these baskets directly benefits a refugee woman weaver and her family.
