Lawrence was born in 1971 in Rusape, Zimbabwe. Having lost his father as a youngster, he was able to complete only a few years of formal education. He apprenticed with a master stone carver and has been practicing his skills for almost twenty years. He currently lives in Mutare with his wife and two children. He is able to support his family with his art and has hired two assistants who are apprenticing under him.
