What is more pure and beautiful than a mother's love for her child? This beautiful sculpture captures just that beautiful essence in stone. The figures show a mother and child, symbolizing the importance of the bond between the two. Much like our family pieces, the linking together of the figures as one form depicts the unity of spirit between the two. They are hand-carved out of rapoka, a semi soft local (to Zimbabwe) stone using simple hand held chisels. Polished with sand and beeswax they are heated on a fire to bring out their brilliant colors.
Also known as "Ukama" or "Loving Family", these Shona stone sculptures are one of the most popular emerging African art forms.
